Commissioning should confirm mechanical position, controls, feedback and process behavior in a defined sequence. A successful electrical signal check alone does not establish that the valve is installed and operating correctly.
Begin with the approved assembly
Verify the valve tag, orientation, flow direction and accessory configuration. Check that the required manuals and safe isolation procedures are available. Initial travel checks should be conducted under controlled conditions that cannot create an unintended process release or hazardous movement.
Verify position before process control
Confirm the actual open and closed segment positions, actuator indication and positioner feedback. Set travel limits and calibrate according to the specific instructions. Check intermediate commands and each agreed loss-of-utility response. A display that changes from zero to one hundred percent is not proof that the shaft follows correctly.
Introduce the process methodically
Follow the plant start-up procedure and observe pressures, flow, leakage and abnormal vibration. Compare the normal operating travel with the approved sizing basis. If the valve stays almost closed or fully open at normal load, investigate the design assumptions before retuning the loop repeatedly. Record final settings and any deviations for maintenance use.
Practical checklist
- Mechanical position and correct stroke direction.
- Signal scaling, feedback and failure tests.
- Controlled introduction of process conditions.
- Final settings, observations and acceptance record.
