Stem packing limits leakage along the shaft to atmosphere. It is a different function from the seat that controls leakage through a closed valve. Both need separate requirements in a procurement specification.
Match packing to the conditions
Temperature, fluid chemistry, cycling and shaft condition affect packing performance. A packing system suitable for one service may not suit another. Increasing gland load can increase friction and interfere with fine positioning; it is not a universal repair for leakage.
Qualification belongs to a tested configuration
If the project requires an emissions qualification, ask for the applicable standard, class, test scope and covered valve arrangement. A general manufacturer certificate does not automatically qualify every packing design. Confirm whether the offered valve, stem and packing combination falls within the demonstrated scope.
Treat maintenance as controlled work
Packing inspection or adjustment should follow the specific operating instructions and site isolation procedure. Leaking hazardous media requires a suitable plant response, not trial-and-error tightening on a live assembly. Record any adjustment and reassess actuator performance if stem friction changes.
