Seat selection balances compatibility, temperature, solids, shut-off performance and cycling. Metal and soft seats each have useful applications, but neither is universally superior.
Understand the material system
A metal seat may use a hardened or coated contact surface, with a separate spring, packing and secondary seals. A soft seat uses a particular polymer or composite grade whose behavior changes with pressure, temperature and chemistry. The name of the primary seat material does not describe the whole assembly.
Relate the choice to the duty
Abrasive particles can cut or embed in soft materials. Metal trim may resist some duties better, but contact damage or erosion can still degrade leakage performance. Clean compatible fluids may favor a qualified soft-seat configuration when tight shut-off is important. Confirm how the seat behaves at the specified differential pressure and cycling rate.
Specify performance directly
Ask for the exact seat construction and leakage test standard, class, medium and conditions. Different VPORTA documents describe different series and seat options; use the selected order datasheet rather than combining catalogue maxima. Temperature suitability must include packing, bearings and elastomers, not only the visible sealing surface.
Practical checklist
- Exact seat grade and trim construction.
- Solids, chemical and temperature exposure.
- Leakage standard and test conditions.
- Expected cycle frequency and maintenance plan.

Seat selection matrix
| Question | Soft-seat review | Metal-seat review |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | Check polymer grade, pressure-temperature curve and exposure time. | Check the complete assembly; metallic seating does not remove packing or body limits. |
| Particles and fibers | Assess embedding, cutting damage and deposits. | Assess abrasion, edge wear, coating adhesion and particle trapping. |
| Leakage | Specify the exact test standard, class and conditions. | Specify the exact test standard, class and conditions; do not infer the result from the word metal. |
| Chemistry | Review fillers, swelling and all secondary seals. | Review substrate, hardfacing, galvanic effects and all secondary seals. |
| Actuator | Review breakaway and running torque under the selected conditions. | Review seat contact, friction and maximum differential-pressure torque. |
Why a seat label is not a performance guarantee
Two metal-seated valves may use different contact geometries, coatings, surface finishes and assembly tolerances. Two nominally similar polymer seats may differ in fillers and mechanical support. Those details affect wear, friction and sealing. A general seat category is therefore a screening choice, not a substitute for the offered construction and its accepted test result.
When comparing leakage, align the standard edition, class, test medium, direction, differential pressure and acceptance procedure. A factory seat test and the plant’s isolation philosophy answer different questions. If positive isolation is needed for personnel protection, follow the plant’s approved isolation procedure rather than treating a control-valve leakage class as sufficient by itself.
Ask for a repairable, traceable selection
Request the seat and segment material schedule, coating or hardfacing description where applicable, and the identified spare-parts set. Establish whether field replacement requires special adjustment or factory work. Maintenance decisions should use the selected valve instructions and safe depressurization procedures.
For VPORTA’s featured catalogue platforms, the 2023 flyer lists metal and soft-seat options for VQ47 and metal seating for VQ77. Do not assume that a VQ47 option is available on VQ77 without a current written confirmation.
