Slurry wear is governed by particle properties, concentration, velocity and impact geometry. Solids percentage alone does not describe the duty, and a hard coating alone does not establish service life.
Make the solids description measurable
Provide a particle-size distribution rather than only a mean size. Identify the material, approximate hardness, shape and whether particles agglomerate. State whether concentration is by mass or volume. A dense mineral slurry at a given mass fraction is not equivalent to a light-fiber suspension at the same number.
Evaluate local velocity
The valve opening can accelerate the slurry near the seat and direct it onto a surface. Long operation at a small opening may concentrate erosion even if average pipe velocity looks acceptable. Include the actual operating travel predicted by sizing and the duration at each condition.
Review compatibility and maintenance together
Corrosion and erosion may interact, undermining a coating or substrate. Ask for the complete trim material system and expected inspection points. In particularly aggressive duties, a lined or purpose-built slurry valve may be more appropriate. Any service-life estimate should be linked to a defined process envelope and supporting experience, not a generic material label.
Practical checklist
- Particle distribution, shape and hardness.
- Mass or volume solids concentration, clearly labelled.
- Flow, density, pressure and smallest sustained opening.
- Fluid chemistry, temperature and cleaning method.
