Flashing vs cavitation: similar beginnings, different outcomes

Both flashing and cavitation can begin when a liquid vaporizes in a low-pressure region. With cavitation, bubbles collapse after pressure recovery. With flashing, vapor persists downstream because the recovered pressure remains too low for the fluid to stay fully liquid.

Why the distinction matters

A trim designed to manage cavitation is not automatically a solution for persistent two-phase flashing. The downstream mixture can accelerate and erode the outlet and pipework. Understanding the final phase condition is necessary before choosing the valve geometry, materials and downstream size.

Data needed for an assessment

Supply the fluid composition, inlet and outlet absolute pressures, temperature and vapor-pressure or thermodynamic information. For mixtures, a single pure-component vapor-pressure figure may be insufficient. State whether any gas is already present at the inlet, since that changes the starting conditions.

Review the complete outlet system

Consider outlet velocity, elbows, reducers, pipe supports and material exposure after the valve. A component that survives inside its body can still create unacceptable downstream erosion or vibration. Final sizing for two-phase service needs a method appropriate to the fluid and operating envelope; the basic clean-liquid Kv equation does not establish suitability.

Practical checklist

  • Identify whether vapor collapses or persists downstream.
  • Include fluid composition and absolute pressures.
  • Review the valve outlet and the first downstream fittings.
  • Request a documented two-phase or severe-service assessment.
