Molasses and sugar liquors change with concentration and temperature. A valve selected only from a warm normal-flow condition may struggle during cold start-up or when deposits form during shutdown.
Characterize the full concentration range
Provide Brix or another clearly defined concentration measurement, density and viscosity at relevant temperatures. Distinguish clarified liquor from fibrous juice and identify suspended solids. These fluids can require different flow-path, seat and torque assessments despite being part of the same plant.
Think through start-up and shutdown
The coldest credible liquid may be much more viscous than the normal operating stream. During cooling or idle periods, crystallization can interfere with movement or sealing. State heat-tracing, flushing and cleaning practices. A jacketed or heated construction must be separately specified and confirmed rather than assumed from the valve family.
Include cleaning and contact requirements
Hot water, steam or cleaning chemicals may set the most severe seal exposure. If the valve contacts food product, request the required material declarations and hygiene attributes. An industrial stainless assembly does not automatically meet a particular food-contact or sanitary design requirement.
Practical checklist
- Concentration, density and viscosity versus temperature.
- Fibers, crystals and suspended solids.
- Cold start-up, normal and cleaning conditions.
- Required food-contact documentation.
