Sludge can behave very differently from water. Its viscosity may depend on shear rate, and some mixtures develop a yield stress. These properties affect flow, pressure loss, restart behavior and the interpretation of a simple capacity calculation.
Use representative process data
A viscosity measured at one temperature or shear rate may not represent the valve duty. Where available, provide a rheology curve and describe solids concentration, composition and variability. Include grit, rags or other objects that are mechanically different from fine suspended solids.
Consider stoppage and restart
Material may settle, thicken or compact while the line is idle. The torque required to move the valve after a long stop can differ from clean-fluid bench operation. State idle periods, flushing arrangements and the maximum pressure that can act across the closed valve.
Choose the geometry and control method together
A V-port may suit a qualifying sludge modulation duty, while an appropriate knife gate can be a useful isolation alternative. A full-bore path may reduce obstructions but does not alone solve plugging. Final selection should consider flow-path clearance, seat protection, actuation and a credible cleaning procedure.
