Body design pressure, operating pressure drop and shut-off differential pressure describe different demands. Combining them into one pressure figure can lead to an unsuitable body, wrong capacity or undersized actuator.
Body pressure rating
The body must withstand the applicable pressure at the actual temperature and material rating. A pressure-class label is not a fixed allowable pressure under every temperature. The flange drilling, body design and seat differential-pressure capability should all be checked in the selected datasheet.
Operating pressure drop
Sizing uses the pressure lost across the valve at each flowing condition. For a pump-fed line, some pressure is consumed by static elevation, piping, equipment and downstream backpressure. Treating all discharge pressure as valve ΔP can understate the required coefficient and distort the severity review.
Closed-valve differential
When the valve is shut, the upstream pressure may rise toward pump shut-off head or another credible maximum. That differential can exceed the normal regulating drop and increase seating torque. Provide reverse-pressure cases too. The actuator should be checked against the correct torque envelope, not just the normal flow condition.
Practical checklist
- State P1 and P2 with gauge or absolute units.
- Use linked operating cases.
- Include pump shut-off and upset conditions.
- Confirm the pressure-temperature rating for the offered materials.
