V-port ball valve vs knife gate valve
For fibers and particles, begin with the operating task. A segmented V-port is a strong candidate for modulation; a suitable knife gate can be a practical choice for isolation-only service.
| Decision point | V-port segmented valve | Knife gate valve |
|---|---|---|
| Primary duty | Characterized rotary control; configured shut-off | Primarily open/close isolation |
| Flow path | V-shaped opening varies with travel | Full-bore path when a suitable gate design is fully open |
| Fiber handling | Closing edge can shear fibers with suitable seat geometry | Gate can cut through suitable stock; performance depends on design |
| Installation | Quarter-turn actuator; lateral clearance matters | Linear gate travel; overhead clearance matters |
| Continuous throttling | A normal purpose of a selected control configuration | Only where the particular design is approved for throttling |
| Decision driver | Control stability across the operating envelope | Isolation reliability, bore and solids handling |
What changes the decision?
If your duty has only two states—fully open and fully closed—do not pay for modulation unless another feature of the V-port design is needed. Compare actual pressure, particle behavior, cycling and maintenance access. Neither valve family has a universal service-life advantage.
Compare offers on the same basis
- Use identical medium composition, flow cases, pressures and temperatures.
- State the same leakage test, failure response and accessory scope.
- Compare expected maintenance and spare parts alongside the purchase price.
- Request drawings and technical deviations before accepting an alternative.
